A small, independent project with a simple premise: a passport photo is a solved technical problem, so nobody should pay €15 for one, or hand their face to a data broker to avoid it.
PassportNinja is built and run by one small independent team, not a photo chain or a venture-backed startup. It runs on our own hardware: the face detection, cropping and background replacement all happen on a machine we physically own, not on rented cloud GPUs. That's the whole reason it can be free: our marginal cost per photo is a few seconds of electricity. The ads on the site pay for the power and the internet connection, and that's the entire business model. No premium tier, no "pay to remove the watermark" (there is no watermark), no selling anything on the back end.
Passport photos are biometric by nature, so we're explicit about this:
The short version: we want to hold your photo for the couple of seconds it takes to crop it, and not a moment longer. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
We apply the officially published size, head-height and background rules per country, and we measure the result and warn you when something looks off. What we can't promise is acceptance: that decision always belongs to the issuing authority, and it also depends on things a tool can't fully judge: your expression, lighting on the day, glasses rules, how recent the photo is. We'd rather say that plainly than stamp "guaranteed" on the page. Follow the warnings and the checklist in your result, and you'll have the same photo a booth would have sold you.
