Every country publishes the same three numbers in a slightly different form: how large the photo is, how tall your head must be inside it, and where your eyes have to sit. The United States wants a square of two by two inches with the head between one and one and three-eighths inches; most of Europe uses 35 by 45 millimetres with the head between 32 and 36. Get one of those wrong and the application comes back, however good the photograph is. That measuring is what software is genuinely good at: the tool finds your face, works out where the crown of your head and the tip of your chin are, scales the picture so both land inside the official band, straightens it if you were off-centre, and replaces the background with an even white.

Not the measurements — those are geometry and the tool gets them right. What actually gets photos rejected is judgement: whether your expression counts as neutral, whether your glasses throw a reflection, whether a strand of hair covers an eye, whether the light flattened your face. No automatic tool can promise acceptance, and any that does is selling something. So the ten seconds before you upload decide more than the software does: face a window rather than a lamp, stand an arm's length from a plain wall so you cast no shadow on it, look straight into the lens, mouth closed, expression flat, hat off.
